40.) I Saw A Glass Mirrored In A Firmament Made New . . .

I saw a glass – mirrored in a firmament made new
In it – the essence of the quest – the drink of life:
That longed-for something we couldn’t name.
The sequestered light resided there – and wisdom
That would turn our base metal into gold
Our earthly croaking to that of the songs of doves.
In it was life – yet life turned so completely
That to the world, deceived – it knew too much
Its lively drink seemed black as night, and even
Dark as death – and in all its limpid ways – perilous.
But I saw it – from within – within the leaden glass
Inside and on the further side of the crystal sky
Where – against me – it was not mirrored to me
Sipped from and drunk in full – it had changed me
And I could say: What of fear, if the end of it was joy?
What did the peeling away, or the rocky ride matter
If in the end, it led to a kind, bright destiny
Appointed from the beginning, and even from before it?
